Hugo Santos

Long Version

“Hugo Santos captivates with the power of his instrument and the fullness of his timbre.” (Forumopera, March 2026

Born in Bergerac, Hugo Santos is of French and Spanish descent. Inspired by his grandfather, an amateur trumpeter and singer, he dreamed from childhood of becoming an opera singer. This dream never left him. After obtaining a scientific baccalaureate, he entered the Bordeaux Conservatory in 2010, studying singing with Maryse Castets and contemporary dance. He graduated in 2019. Furthermore, since 2016, he has been selected annually to participate in Silvana Bazzoni-Bartoli’s masterclass at the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, as well as in Salzburg and Monte-Carlo. He has been a member of the Lyon Opera Studio since 2024.

Hugo Santos made his professional debut at the Bordeaux National Opera as a soloist in Handel's Messiah (conducted by Marc Minkowski) and was subsequently entrusted with the role of Frère Jean in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette. He then appeared in smaller roles at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Opéra national du Capitole (Toulouse), the Opéra de Rouen Normandie, and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, all of which provided him with opportunities to grow both vocally and dramatically.

In his first year at the Lyon Opera Studio, he participated in four productions at the Opéra National de Lyon: Wozzeck (Erster Handwerksbursch), Andrea Chénier (Dumas and Schmitt), Madama Butterfly (Ufficiale del registo), and La Forza del Destino (Alcade, Chirurgio). During the 2025/26 season, he takes on roles such as Nikitich in Boris Godunov, Luther in Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Seneca in L’incoronazione di Poppea on this same stage.
