On one side of the border is Nova Gorica, Slovenia's youngest town; on the other, on the Italian side, is Gorizia. In 2025, Nova Gorica and Gorizia will be one and the same ‘European Capital of Culture’, the first to be cross-border! As part of the festivities for the twinned European capital, the Piccolo Opera Festival is presenting a fitting way Il Viaggio a Reims, an opera that Rossini composed for the coronation of Charles X of Bourbon. Why a fitting way? Because it turns out that Charles X died in Gorizia and was buried in the Franciscan monastery of Castagnevizza, located in the eastern part of Gorizia, which in 1947 became the Slovenian town of Nova Gorica!
Patrick Kabongo will be on hand for the occasion, taking on the role of the Conte di Libenskof as part of a very fine team!
