Governess at the Opéra du Rhin

In 2014 Heather Newhouse made her role debut as the Governess in Benjamin Britten’s The turn of the screw at the Lyon Opera. The critics acclaimed her„surprising interpretation of the Governess, showing vocally as well as theatrically the gradual invasion of the doubt on this teacher while needing to face up a most uncommon situation“ (ConcertoNet). A performance „matching perfectly to the frame of the staging: The Governess is faced with appearances which overstrain her. However, her interpretation – both in perfectly balanced vocal delivery and acting – remains committed to an unbroken faultless normality, except when emotion overbears herself at the very end of the opera when she cradles Miles’ dead corps to the Malo-song“ (Forumopera).

Heather Newhouse is now once again performing the Governess in Robert Carsen’s beautiful production at the Opéra national du Rhin.

Opening night on September 21, 2016.
