Following his debut at the Paris Opera (Mercure in Platée) and an inspiring summer full of concerts with his ensemble a nocte temporis, Reinoud Van Mechelen is entering the new season with his usual tempo, which means in a rush. Within a narrow temporal sequence his schedule includes a concert-tour with the Collegium Vocale Gent under Philippe Herreweghe (Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine), the title-role in Rameau’s Zoroastre in concert with Les Ambassadeurs - La Grande Ecurie and Alexis Kossenko in Compiègne and at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées as well as the role of David in Marc-Antoine Charpentier's David et Jonathas with the Ensemble Marguerite Louise and Gaétan Jarry at the Opéra Royal de Versailles a. o. After having sung Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte at the Vlaamse Opera and the Evangelist in Saint Matthew’s Passion on tour with the Collegium Vocale Gent and Philippe Herreweghe, Reinoud Van Mechelen has once again delivered a brilliant performance with a repertory which suites him perfectly: Jean-Philippe Rameau.
We are talking about the rediscovery of the original version of the Tragédie lyrique Zoroastre from 1749 which was performed in concert version in a production of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles (CMBV) in Namur, Antwertp and Tourcoing few days ago. With Reinoud in the title-role surrounded by a first-class cast, the ensemble Les Ambassadeurs - La Grande Écurie and the Namur Chamber-Choir conducted by Alexis Kossenko.

The production in concert version will be revived in autumn 2022 (in Compiègne on October 14th and Paris Théâtre des Champs-Elysées on October 16th) and the respective audio-recording will also be released then.
As Rameau suits him so well, Reinoud will soon be making his debut with the Opera de Paris in an opera by Rameau too (Mercure in Platée, opening night on June 17th).
Easter is everywhere the time for passions. For Reinoud Van Mechelen the time for passions means the Evangelist’s time. He sang his very first Evangelist in Bach’s St. John’s Passion in 2014 in Liverpool. Subsequently William Christie committed him as Evangelist again in St. John’s Passion at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw followed by a tour with Les Arts Florissants. Then a regular collaboration emerged with the Collegium Vocale and Philippe Herreweghe.
Within this year’s Easter time, Reinoud Van Mechelen is joining the Collegium Vocale and Philippe Herreweghe on tour throughout Europe singing the Evangelist in Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion.
Reinoud Van Mechelen is one of the most sought-after tenors in the baroque repertoire, however, his star does not don’t only sparkle within this repertoire! After having recently performed Nadir (Les Pêcheurs de Perles) at the Toulon Opera, Gérald (Lakmé) with the Munich Radio Orchestra and Tamino (The Magic Flute) at the Brussels La Monnaie, he will be soon making his role-debut as Ferrando (Cosi fan tutte) at the Vlaamse Opera, the Flemish Opera performing in Antwerp (Opening-night on February 1st, 2022) and Ghent.
After having suffered badly from an extremely high number of performance-cancellations due to the covid-situation, a wonderful season – possibly his most beautiful so far – is starting for Reinoud Van Mechelen. Beforehand: Alpha Classics just released the second part of his trilogy dedicated to the legendary French hautes-contres (high tenors) of the 18th century with the title Jéliote, haute-contre de Rameau. Reinoud returns to the Berlin State-Opera for another series of Hippolyte et Aricie (Hippolyte) right before making his role-debut as Ferrando (Così fan tutte) at De Vlaamse Opera. He appears as „artist in residence“ with the Klara Festival in Brussels, takes the part of the evangelist in Saint Matthew’s Passion with the Collegium Vocale and Philippe Herreweghe on tour throughout Europe before making his debut with the Paris Opera (Mercure in Platée). The end of the season sees him within a staged production of Mondonville’s Titon et l’Aurore at the Opéra Royal de Versailles.
A few days ago, the Opéra Comique presented (in a live-broadcast on Medici.tv) a new production of Titon et l’Aurore, an opéra-ballet in French style à la Jean-Philippe Rameau, set to music by Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville. The male title-role was written for Pierre Jéliote, the tenor-star of the Académie royal de musique at that time who sang the world-premiere in 1753. As Jélyotte’s worthy successor Reinoud Van Mechelen excels in this role showcasing his impressively wide vocal range which guides him up to the high E (even in the high pitch of 400 Hz!) within his act III arietta.
Unanimous accolades from the press, as evidenced by Resmusica (20.01.21): „Reinoud Van Mechelen, the stylite of the current baroque-music-section, is the persuasive performer of the male title-role with explicit enunciation, thrilling heroic attitude and precise stylistic accuracy.” Forumopera adds (21.01.21): “He easily tackles the virtuosic challenges towards the end with lion-hearted, sort of Rossini-like virility … just as he surmounts the heartbreaking aria of caducity and the ardour of love in act I. He is coming off as the great winner from this evening!” No less enthusiasm from Diapason (21.01.21): “ … Reinoud Van Mechelen, the brave Titon with radiant timbre, flawless vocal technique and phenomenal phrasing”. And finally Musicologie.org (20.01.21): „Reinoud Van Mechelen is overwhelming in his grand heroic hymn to love at the very end, revealing himself as the most valiant of the current houte-contres (high tenors)”.

What a delight and pleasant feeling for an artist to be re-invited right after a success! This happened to Reinoud Van Mechelen after his debut at the Berlin State Opera in Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie less than a year ago.
The artistic direction of the company immediately offered him the revival of the production and even more invited him also to join the performance-series of Purcell’s King Arthur within the festival "Barocktage“. Conductor: René Jacobs. Staging: Sven-Eric Bechtolf and Julian Crouch.

He is one of the most successful tenors on the international baroque-stage and collaborates with famous conductors such as William Christie, Emmanuelle Haïm, Philippe Herreweghe, Hervé Niquet, Raphaël Pichon, Sir Simon Rattle and Jordi Savall, to name only a few of them. 2014 was a milestone in his career when he sang the extremely demanding part of the Evangelist in Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion for the first time in Liverpool. Since then this role is part of his repertoire and as Easter comes, he performs it this year again, first on concert-tour with Les Arts florissants (Baden Baden, London, Madrid, Valencia, Saragossa) and subsequently with The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. When making his successful role-debut as Tamino (The Magic Flute) at the Brussels La Monnaie recently, Reinoud Van Mechelen once again proved to be a world-class-tenor apart from the baroque-repertoire too.
His next stop now is Berlin where he will be performing the title-role in Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie conducted by Sir Simon Rattle at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden; his stage-partners within this production are Elsa Dreisig, Anna Prohaska and Magdalena Kožena a. o. Reinoud Van Mechelen succeeded to prove his outstanding status as a Rameau-performer already when singing the title-roles of Dardanus (under Raphaël Pichon’ baton) as well as of Zoroastre and Actéon (conducted by William Christie).

Even though having become one of the big names on the international baroque-stage (what he will definitely re-prove at the end of this year when performing the male title-role in Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie at the Berlin State Opera under Sir Simon Rattle’s baton), Reinoud Van Mechelen also aims to add new roles from other periods to his repertory as a lyric tenor. In this respect he recently performed Belmonte in The abduction from the Seraglio in Paris and Gérald in Lakmé in Munich, both in concert version. This time his engagement is concerning a new and long-desired Mozart-part: His role-debut as Tamino (The magic Flute) happens to be coincidental with his debut at the Brussels Théâtre royal de la Monnaie. Nowadays Reinoud Van Mechelen belongs on international stage to the leading French tenors who are focusing on the repertory of an „haute-contre-tenor” which means, of course, to regularly rise to the challenge of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s masterpieces. He performed recently as Dardanus in Bordeaux and as Zoroastre in Aix-en-Provence, Montpellier and Beaune, both productions conducted by Raphaël Pichon. The CD-recording of Rameau’s Naïs under György Vashegyi’s baton which has been released by Glossa Music lately received unanimous enthusiasm.
Reinoud Van Mechelen is now in Dijon, Jean-Philippe Rameau’s native town, rehearsing the title role in a new production of Pygmalion with Emmanuelle Haïm conducting. Performances on Mai 23, 25 and 27, 2018.
One of the highlights of Reinoud’s upcoming season - apart from his debut at the Théâtre royal de la Monnaie as Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) - will be Hippolyte within a new production of Hippolyte et Aricie at the Berlin State Opera under Sir Simon Rattle’s baton.
In 2016 the label Alpha Classics released „Erbarme Dich“, Reinoud Van Mechelen’s first album with his newly founded ensemble a nocte temporis.
It was unanimously acclaimed by the press, for example by the French music-magazine Classica which awarded a „Choc Classica“ to the album describing it as „A Bach-recording blessed by the gods“. Reinoud Van Mechelen’s second release is now again treading new ground, the choice of repertory being utterly uncommon, but following a most particular intellectual and highly individual resolution. Our Belgian Tenor decided to put Louis-Nicolas Clérambault in his true light. The great, however less-known French composer from the 18th century had significantly contributed to the development of the French cantata. Reinoud considers his cantatas to be real miniature operas which he would like to prove together with Anna Besson (flute), Emmanuel Resche-Caserta (violin), Myriam Rignol (viola da gamba) and Benjamin Alard (harpsichord and organ).
The Belgian tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen proceeds establishing himself as one of the leading tenors on the baroque scene by making his debut with the Zurich Opera House. Within a new production of Médée by Marc-Antoine Charpentier he will be performing the main role of Jason under William Christie’s baton. Opening night on 22 January 2017.
The first solo-CD of one of the most sought-after tenors of the baroque-scene has just been published. For his first issue, released by the label Alpha Classics, Reinoud Van Mechelen has chosen masterworks by Johann Sebastian Bach compiled under the title "Erbarme dich" (Have mercy). The genius of the famous Cantor at St. Thomas in Leipzig and his outstanding ability to describe the human soul are brilliantly put in their true light by Reinoud Van Mechelen and his ensemble a nocte temporis (consisting of Anna Besson - flute, Benjamin Alard - organ and Ronan Kernoa - violoncello).

The upcoming summer will be highlighted by the title role in Rameau’s Zoroastre in concert version on tour with the Ensemble Pygmalion and Raphaël Pichon, on July 15 at the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier, on July 16 at the Beaune Festival and on July 18 at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.
By no means to be missed further highlights at the Beaune Festival: a program including Bach cantatas with Les Arts Florissants and William Christie on July 22 and the title role in Charpentier’s La descente d’Orphée aux Enfers with the Ensemble Correspondances and Sébastien Daucé on July 29.
Next season Reinoud Van Mechelen will make a significant step of career by adding the roles of Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) and Gérald (Lakmé) – both in concert version - to his repertoire.
On the occasion of his first collaboration with Laurence Equilbey and her new ensemble, Insula orchestra, Reinoud Van Mechelen says (temporarily) goodbye to the Barock repertoire which have made his reputation and says hello to Mozart. The program includes the Vesperae Solennes de Confessore touring London (Barbican on September 21, 2015), Paris (Philharmonie on September 24), Aix-en-Provence (Grand Théâtre de Provence on September 25) and Versailles (Théâtre royal on September 26).

At the start of this season Reinoud Van Mechelen made a sensational impression in Rameau’s Castor et Pollux at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
The Financial Times emphasised "his astounding ease when performing the athlete’s aria "Éclatez, fières trompettes" (14.10.2014), and so did Forumopera: "Reinoud Van Mechelen’s ease in the most virtuoso aria of the whole work is fascinating" (15.10.2014). Diapason highlighted "his precious fluency" (15.10.2014) and Le Monde granted "a special mention to brilliant Reinoud Van Mechelen". Last but not least Concertclassic praises: „radiant, youthful and powerful Reinoud Van Mechelen in the athlete's scaring arie" (17.10.2014).

After a season’s start almost exclusively dedicated to Jean-Philippe Rameau (composer’s Anniversary!), Reinoud Van Mechelen moves to another great French composer of the beginning of the XVIIIth century, André Campra.
At the Opéra Comique in Paris he is taking part in the new production of the opéra-ballet Les Fêtes vénitiennes. Les Arts Florissants are playing under the baton of William Christie. Stage director is Robert Carsen. Opening night on 26th January 2015.
A rich season is announcing itself for Reinoud Van Mechelen.
He will be debuting at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in a production of Castor et Pollux (roles of Mercure, a Spartan and an athlete). The stage director is Christan Schiarette and the musical director Hervé Niquet. Premiere on 13 October 2014.
The very charming production of "Rameau, Maître à danser", presented last June by the Théâtre de Caen and Les Arts Florissants conducted by William Christie, will be touring to the Opéra de Dijon, the Cité de la Musique in Paris, the Philharmonie de Luxembourg, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and the Barbican Centre in London. Reinoud Van Mechelen will then leave Monsieur Rameau (but only temporarily) in order to take part in the production of Les Fêtes vénitiennes by Campra at the Opéra Comique, staged by Robert Carsen and under the musical direction of William Christie. Premiere on 26 January 2015.
For the official opening of the Rameau year, a true event took place on 13 February at the Opéra Royal de Versailles: the rediscovery of one of the last unknown treasures of the French master, Les Fêtes de l’Hymen et de l’Amour (1747). Reinoud Van Mechelen participated in this concert performance alongside with the Concert Spirituel under the baton of Hervé Niquet. In order to continue the celebrations for Jean-Philippe Rameau, Reinoud Van Mechelen will take part in the staged production of "Rameau, Maître à danser" (including two ballet pieces: Daphnis et Eglée and La naissance d’Osiris) in Caen with Les Arts Florissants and William Christie (Premiere on 4 June 2014) and will subsequently take part in the production Castor et Pollux at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, once again with the Concert Spirituel and Hervé Niquet (premiere on 13 October).
Friends of baroque music have already noted his clear and soft voice as well as his fine musical lines. Discovered by William Christie, Reinoud Van Mechelen has in the last year made his debut on prestigious stages such as the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and the Wiener Konzerthaus.
A few days ago Reinoud Van Mechelen was acclaimed at the Château de Versailles in the title role of Charpentier's Actéon with Les Arts Florissants.
