“An amazing discovery”, wrote enthusiastically the daily newspaper Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung referring recently to Margot Genet, still a member of the NRW Opera-Studio, a cooperation between the opera companies of Dortmund, Essen, Gelsenkirchen and Wuppertal. As from season 2023/24 she is a soloist in the ensemble of the Musiktheater im Revier (Gelsenkirchen), starting with two new roles: Despina (Così fan tutte) and Annina (Eine Nacht in Venedig).
Born in Limoges (France), Margot Genet took vocal and cello-lessons in her hometown before pursuing her studies at the Geneva Haute Ecole de Musique (taking a bachelor-degree) and at the University of the Arts Berlin (acquiring her Master in Opera Performance degree in Elisabeth Werres’ class in 2019). She also took part in numerous masterclasses with Edith Wiens, Hedwig Fassbender, Elène Golgevit, Regina Werner and Ludovic Tézier, attracting attention also when joining the Opéra de Lyon opera-studio, the Academy Philippe Jaroussky (Beethoven year) and the Royaumont Foundation (2021). She was an award-winner of the vocal competition of the Kammeroper Schloß Rheinsberg in 2017 and a holder of a scholarship “Malvina et Denise Menda” from the Paris Opéra Comique in 2021 and a scholarship from the Richard-Wagner-Verband in Dortmund in 2023. During the summer 2022, she was one of the chosen artists within the prestigious Verbier Festival Academy’s Atelier Lyrique.
Since 2019, the soprano with the “silvery top-register” (source: olyrix.com) has appeared on the stages of the Opéra de Lyon (L'Enfant et les Sortilèges, Ariane et Barbe-Bleue, Manon), the Royaumont Abbey (Poppea in Haendel’s Agrippina), the Musiktheater im Revier (Eurydice in Orphée aux Enfers) and the Theater Dortmund (title-role in Die Kinder des Sultans, a world-premiere by Avner Dorman). The current season 2022/23 sees her making her debut as Norina in Don Pasquale and as Amelia in Bernarda Albas Haus by Aribert Reimann (staged by Dietrich Hilsdorf) at the Musiktheater im Revier. She also appears at the Theater Dortmund (Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, Manja in Gräfin Mariza), the Wuppertal Opera (Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro) and the Opéra Comique in Paris (Lisbé in Zémire et Azor by Grétry).
In concert Margot Genet appeared recently at the Festival de l'Abbaye de Sylvanès (Fauré-Requiem), at the Festival 1001 Notes, at the Wurzburg Mozart Festival, with the Orchestre national de Lyon and with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen. She collaborates on a regular basis with the ensemble Correspondances and gives frequently recitals together with pianist Justine Eckhaut. The upcoming season will be highlighted by a concert at the Teatro Real de Madrid presenting the production of Médée by Cherubini as well as a concert-version of Carmen (Frasquita) touring throughout Europe with the Ensemble B’Rock and René Jacobs conducting.
